Hycamite decomposition plant (HDP)
The HDP is Hycamite’s industrial-scale research, development and validation plant. Previously known as the Customer Sample Facility (CSF), it has been in operation since 2025.
The plant verifies at production scale that the technology, the process economics and the product quality meet commercial requirements. It confirms that catalysts and process parameters developed at laboratory and pilot scale work at industrial scale, and it produces validation batches for customer qualification. New carbon materials are developed and tested here as part of the commercialisation process.
The HDP also serves as the reference design for plants delivered to customers. Feedstock is LNG from Norway and biomethane from Finland.
The plant is located in Kokkola Industrial Park, northern Europe’s largest ecosystem of inorganic chemical industry, next to Hycamite’s headquarters and pilot plant.
The next step on the same site
Hycamite is planning a carbon refinery (HCR) on the same site, directly connected to the decomposition plant. The planned annual capacity is 3,000 tonnes of carbon products, of which 900 tonnes is battery-grade graphite and 2,100 tonnes other carbon products. Pre-engineering is under way and the investment decision has not yet been made.
The two plants form one continuous chain from methane to a qualified end product. Co-location means the carbon moves straight from decomposition to refining without transport or intermediate handling, and both process stages can be developed together.
The HCR will produce customer-specific validation batches and verify product quality in demanding applications, where the customer approves the material through its own testing. Hycamite’s graphite production is recognised by the European Commission as a Strategic Project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act.
