Hycamite’s technology and EU Strategic Project status enable large-scale graphite investment in Finland and aim to strengthen Europe’s supply of battery-grade graphite.
Hycamite’s proprietary technology and its Strategic Project status under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) enable the development of a large-scale graphite production project in Finland. Yle Kokkola recently highlighted the topic in a news article.
The project will be developed in phases. The first phase is a small-scale production facility that will demonstrate the product economics and qualities. Construction is expected to begin next year at the Kokkola Industrial Park, next to Hycamite’s existing hydrogen production site. Once the successful operations of this Phase 1 have started, Hycamite will, with its partners, launch the second phase to reach full scale.
At full scale, the facility could produce up to 200 kilotons of graphite annually. This would cover nearly 40% of Europe’s current demand for battery-grade graphite. It would also strengthen the availability of critical raw materials for the European battery supply chain.
The graphite could serve multiple industries. These include battery manufacturing, as well as the steel, concrete, tire, and defence sectors.
