About Hycamite

Hycamite is a visionary, clean tech force. We are focused on creating a profound impact by decarbonizing industry

We're decarbonizing industry

Hycamite is a deep and clean tech company that employs its disruptive, IP-protected proprietary technology to efficiently split methane, producing low-carbon hydrogen and industrial-grade solid carbon.

Leveraging more than 20 years of research from the University of Oulu, Finland, we have developed a process that consumes only 13% of the energy required for electrolysis, emitting zero emissions.

As a leading carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology solution, Hycamite creates carbon sinks and provides high-quality carbon for demanding applications, such as Li-ion batteries, electronics, additives in polymers and composite materials and concrete manufacturing.

Based in Kokkola, Finland, Hycamite is a privately owned company driving clean tech innovation.

Founders story

Our journey started in 2018 on a dark and rainy evening in Berlin when Matti Malkamäki attended Germany’s Natural Gas Association’s annual meeting. There, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) won an award for their methane pyrolysis study. Intrigued, Matti downloaded a few articles for future reading.

Months later, forced to stay inside on a rainy Finnish summer day, he rediscovered these articles and saw potential. Matti, an experienced clean tech entrepreneur, reached out to Laura Rahikka, an accomplished lecturer in process engineering. Laura confirmed that Professor Ulla Lassi from the University of Oulu already had expertise that could be of use in commercializing methane-splitting. Excited to start developing a new methane-splitting technology, Laura contacted Niina Grönqvist, an experienced multi-talent in chemical engineering and chemistry. With the help of Ulla Lassi’s research, Matti, Laura and Niina decided to start a company.

In 2020, inspired by Donald Duck’s “The Mad Chemist” story, Hycamite was born. The name combines “hydrogen” and “carbon” to reflect our mission.

Hycamite’s story is a testament to the organic blend of intellect and innovation, crafting a future where research and knowledge drive new sustainable solutions. We invite the world to join us on this transformative journey, where we make the impossible possible.

This isn’t magic, it’s science.
